While basics are here to stay, Fall/Winter 2022 runways experimented with extreme opposites of the silhouette spectrum, from micro-mini skirts to floor-sweeping pants. Unprecedented times have also propelled intentional styling that uplifts in different ways, be it through skin-baring designs that challenge self-confidence or elegant tailoring that empowers with more masculine forms. Find out what the different trends entail and how to elevate your wardrobe below.
Back to Basics
Bottega Veneta's runway pairing of a white tank top with blue jeans set the tone for the return of basics. Besides replicating the timeless look with minimalistic tops from T by Alexander Wang and straight-leg jeans from Maison Margiela, consider layering the outfit with Burberry's classic plaid cardigan. Elsewhere, sweat sets remain cold-weather staples, which can be found from Sporty & Rich and AMI Paris.
Retro Uniform
Following Miu Miu's iconic mini skirt moment in Spring/Summer 2022, the mischievous silhouette is still prevalent this season with an injection of the '80s and '90s' retro aesthetics. For a preppy look, pair micro-mini pieces from Kijun and MISBHV with Ganni's funky knit vests. House of Sunny also offers letterman bomber jackets that made it onto the season's range of back-to-school varsity attire.
Bare Confidence
Partly a revival of skimpy 2000s designs, FW22 saw revealing crops and cuts elevated with today's body inclusivity in mind. Cut-out detail featured on the Wynn Hamlyn Origami Dress, for one, accentuates the figure by creating an hourglass silhouette. Jacquemus' Sierra T-shirt and Dion Lee's Double Lock Corset Mini Dress are more pieces that show some skin, while snug body suits from Entire Studios and sheer fabrics play with sensuality.
Drop the Hem
Polar opposites to the mini skirt craze, floor-sweeping pants were another striking silhouette that frequented FW22 runways, as seen on Squid Game actress HoYeon Jung in the Louis Vuitton show. Long dresses from Rohe and Aaizél and wide-legged pants from Jacquemus are examples that are on trend with the season's affinity for draped hems and fluid structures.
Workwear 2.0
From chic tailoring that reflects more appreciation for formal elegance to oversized suits taking cues from classic menswear in light of androgynous fashion, FW22 saw new takes on traditional workwear. Acne Studios' matching blazer and pants in brown and the pairing of T by Alexander Wang's Colorblocked Boyfriend Shirt with Ann Demeulemeester's Bonne Slouchy Trousers are versatile outfits fitting for any occasion.
