A24 — the entertainment company behind the award-winning titles Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Whale, Minari and more — has taken over social media once again with the release of its latest show, BEEF. Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong and directed by Lee Sung-jin, the series is praised for its unexpected plot twists as well as the cast's performance, in addition to its significance and influence on the AAPI community with all of its main characters being Asian-American.
In celebration of the show, we've put together a roundup of what sneakers the characters of BEEF wear, from Amy's Maison Margiela Tabi shoes "giving Kōyōhaus" to Naomi's glittery Alexander McQueen sneakers. Continue scrolling to read the staff members of Hypebeast and HBX breaking down what each character on BEEF would sport. You can shop all styles on HBX now.
Editor’s Note: This article contains minor spoilers for BEEF.
Amy Lau (Ali Wong)
Maison Margiela Tabi Canvas
Amy, a successful businesswoman looking to close a deal to sell her company to Jordan Forster, is all about the zen vibes (that's what it seems like from the outside, at least). "Amy wants the appearance of zen, balance and composure with a hint of edge. She’d definitely rock the Margiela Tabi sneakers 'cause 'it’s giving Kōyōhaus,'" says Sammy Su, Senior Editorial Coordinator at Hypebeast. "Plus if she got bunions you know she’s gonna cater to that too. It’s the mother in her. I wouldn’t say it’d be the perfect shoe for an occasional desert blood bath, but that’s okay. It’s within her color palette."
Danny Cho (Steven Yeun)
Nike Air Pegasus 83
Danny, who runs his own construction company, is working on finding a home in the United States for his parents, who are stuck in South Korea. Joyce Li, Editor at Hypebeast, says, "At the core of it all, Danny is your typical working-class guy who just wants to do well for his family. He just wants to keep his head down, work and make an honest living."
We've paired Danny with the Nike Air Pegasus 83. "Being in the construction business, helping out at the church and running errands, he looks for versatility and comfort above all else. The Nike Air Pegasus 83 does exactly that — it is the everyday, reliable shoe that lets Danny keep doing what he’s doing," Joyce adds.
Paul (Young Mazino)
NOCTA x Nike Air Force 1
Paul, Danny's younger brother who is up to no good, stays at home all day gaming and trading cryptocurrency while seeking love online. (Although he's catfished) Paul is a hopeless romantic, which is why we think he would wear this particular white Nike Air Force 1 created in collaboration with Drake's line NOCTA. The sneakers feature "Love You Forever" text on the soles, perfectly reflecting Paul's longing for love and his desire to become a millionaire one day.
George (Joseph Lee)
Common Projects Tennis 77
George, Amy's husband and Fumi's son, is an artist who creates gloopy ceramic vases in his studio, taking care of his daughter at home while Amy works on building her business. A fan of cozy knit cardigans, color-cooridinated suits and neutral, earthy shades, we can't help but imagine George wearing Common Projects' minimalist Tennis 77 sneakers in a similar palette.
Fumi (Patti Yasutake)
Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto QS
Fumi, George's mother and Amy's mother-in-law, loves to pair her statement eyeliner look with bright colors and patterns. "Fumi is the total opposite of her son George. Brazen enough to shoot at armed intruders, she sees things as they are and lives every day like her last," Aaron Chow, Associate Editor at Hypebeast, tells us. "Once married to a renowned artist, her free-spirited attitude and eye for design result in bold outfits brimming with patterns and colors. I could see Fumi copping a pair of Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto QS to match with her granddaughter."
Jordan Forster (Maria Bello)
Fear of God Eternal Dress Mule
We know Fear of God's Eternal Dress Mule isn't exactly a sneaker, but we couldn't see Jordan Forster in any other shoe. The CEO of Forster — the company looking to buy Amy's business Kōyōhaus — continuously holds off on finalizing the deal, contributing to Amy's road rage and all of the events that follow.
Forster, who is obsessed with the not-for-sale Tamago chair owned by George and Amy, sports her signature look featuring acetate frame glasses with loose-fitted shirts and blazers, perfectly matching the minimalist FoG mule.
Naomi (Ashley Park)
Alexander McQueen Oversized
Naomi is Jordan's sister-in-law-turned-lover and also Amy's friend and neighbor. She's always nosy in her family and neighbors' business as Amy works her way to finalizing her Kōyōhaus deal. Naomi's personality with her extravagant wardrobe leads us to pair her with Alexander McQueen's glittery Oversized shoe.
Zarah Cheng, Editor-in-Chief of HBX, shares, "I feel like Naomi is someone who desperately needs attention all the time, so she definitely needs to wear a sneaker that gives a bit (or a lot) of extra height. Doesn't hurt to also throw in a bit of bling bling in there. Also, no judgment, but if you're going to leave your husband for your sister-in-law, you sure as heck are not a subtle lady."
Mia (Mia Serafino)
VEJA Campo Chromefree Leather
Mia, the girl who works at Amy's store and also the girl who has an emotional affair with George, is the type that would probably go with a simple leather sneaker. While building her career as Amy's assistant, she's looking to utilize her art degree and secure a job at an art gallery. Constantly anxious about her position at Kōyōhaus as it nears its sale, Mia appears in hoop earrings, crocheted knit tops and denim shirts, which we would style with Veja's Campo Chromefree Leather sneakers with hits of yellow and orange.
