Exclusive Release: Heron Preston SS18 "AIRBORNE" Collection
Back in the good old days, when Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport stood just 800 meters apart from the Kowloon Walled City, residents would look up to see planes fly alarmingly close, often times coming just one storey shy from a crash. Interestingly, both establishments were demolished around the same time and now reference a specific period along the city's historical trajectories. You can see slight portrayals of this past scattered across certain areas of the city in the form of old unkempt buildings and estates. Hong Kong, with its dense population and aging concrete highrises, cluster together like trees in a forest — the brutalist architectures and dissonant cityscapes take on a somewhat dystopian, yet romanticized undertone.
With the launch of our Exclusive Heron Preston Spring/Summer 2018 "AIRBORNE" Capsule Collection, we've lensed our editorial in the frayed backdrops of the city, capturing vignettes of old Hong Kong and the concept of travel.
This time around, the designer himself turns to the airport as site of inspiration. Heron Preston recontextualizes the everyday objects in airports that we often overlook — referencing things like business class amenity kits and airport security signs. The collection delivers a considered range of utilitarian pieces alongside variations of graphics and fonts. Featured garbs include bags, belts, hats, socks and a concise spread of T-shirts and long-sleeves. The recurring "стиль" motif comes embroidered in Russian text. The signifier, "Business Class" marks each item as part of this exclusive capsule, while "HKG" references the Hong Kong International Airport. A key item is the Prohibited Items List T-shirt with a list of flight-banned items reading "Security Notice To Passengers Prohibited Items" overlayed over the graphic. Other items include the Fanny Packs that come in Red, White and Navy; the Jacquard Tape Belts come in a selection of solid colors that round out the collection.
