Founded in 2018 by Bunka Fashion College alumnus Norio Terada, the Tokyo-based label takes its name from the garment element that joins the front and back across the shoulders. For Terada, the concept serves as both a design methodology and a core philosophy, aiming to bridge materials, traditional production techniques, and the wearer into a single, cohesive dialogue.
What separates YOKE from standard minimal menswear is Terada's obsession with fine art. Collections regularly draw inspiration from legendary artists such as Mark Rothko, Jean Arp, and Cy Twombly, translating canvas textures and color fields directly into tactile knitwear and fluid tailoring. Rather than simply printing artwork onto fabric, YOKE captures the emotion of a painting through raw material construction. Multi-colored yarns are hand-brushed into gradient mohairs to recreate the bleeding edges of oil paint, while exposed seams and contrasting panels echo the structural balance of modern sculpture.
Terada's extensive background in pattern making manifests in the brand's signature modularity. Trenches feature detachable liners that function as standalone blousons, and cardigans unzip to pair seamlessly with contrasting pieces.
