Fashion designer Alexandra Hackett has launched ALCH’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection, exploding with pieces that increase functionality in innovative designs. The label is focused on exploring the different ways of deconstruction and reconstruction, aiming to bridge the gap between fashion and functionality, whilst unintentionally promoting sustainability along the way. This is reflected in the Lanyard top and Lanyard Bucket hat made from reconstructed lanyards.
The pieces from this collection such as the Velcro Panelled Short with Removable Pockets, challenges conventional practicality of apparel through increasing the functionality of traditional design of garments in an unorthodox way. This collection boasts the use of velcro panelling and pockets a lot, such as in the Velcro Panelled Assymetrical Gilet with Removable Pockets to add to the idea of hyper-functionality, stemming from an old Japanese practice called Chindōgu, which involves “inventing products that are not entirely useful, but simultaneously not useless”. The collection takes many familiar silhouettes in sportswear, such as track jackets, bucket hats, and sweatpants, and switches up the way each garment is constructed to merge sportswear with lifestyle.
