Back in 2012, streetwear brand BornxRaised sowed its seeds in LA, garnering influences from its local gang culture and Latino history. For its 2016 spring/summer collection, the brand has returned to its roots in stronger form than ever, embellishing streetwear staples with provocative graphics heavily inspired by the City of Angeles. BornxRaised, founded by rapper Spanto during a stint in prison, is famous for its off-kilter pieces that incorporate old Gothic lettering superimposed on contemporary silhouettes and images - the designer’s form of social protest against gentrification in LA. This season’s offerings continued strongly in this vein. The pinnacle of the collection was a white tee printed allover with high-contrast black and white graphics and red Gothic text. Striking the perfect balance between flashy and laidback, the collection stands out even among the most ostentatious of LA dressers.
