L.A. label, PLEASURES, returns with a capsule exclusive to HBX; The 2018 "Heaven In Isolation" collection features a slew of graphics that explore the themes of self-reflection and space travel. Co-founder and designer, Alex James, mentions that the collection is about moments of self-discovery during the time that a person spends alone: "A person excels in life when they truly come to understand themselves and project that self-awareness onto others." At the same token, James also focuses on drawing attention to the topic of space exploration: "In 2040, many Los Angeles citizens will be heading to Mars apart of the SpaceX program. We want to get people to start thinking about space travel and just our universe as a whole."
Lensed in a dimly lit, sequestered car park, our editorial captures the dissonant undertones of the graphics. Various lo-fi images of astronauts, distorted faces, barcodes, planets as well as phrases are emblazoned over a spread of T-shirts, long-sleeves, coach jackets and side bags. Standout pieces like the PLEASURES Black Space Freedom Coach Jacket features an illustration of an astronaut in space with the words "Total Freedom" juxtaposed. The Friends T-shirt displays a hand opening up from a closed fist captured in three descending frames. Other pieces like the PLEASURES Closed Mouth hoodie, Lovestars hoodie, Barcode T-shirt and Gum Ball side bag round out the spread.
