The elevation of streetwear to its current heights originated from North America, until the 90's where Japan appropriated their style and attracted a hype element to it. Through the years streetwear has bounced between the two countries, but with globalisation and post-Pharrell era of streetwear, there seems to be a shift towards other countries' appropriation of this culture.
China, post communism, has led to a free-trade society that offers global exposure for their culture and community. Streetwear has reflectively illustrated the democratisation of Chinese culture, and as Sankuanz has successful done so, immersed themselves into the world of global fashion, showcasing their collections in London and Paris.
Founded by designer Shanguan Zhe in 2008, his collections fuse traditional textile craftsmanship into modern silhouettes, focusing on a simple and utilitarian design. His fashion aesthetics mimic the feelings he has for life, capturing the moments in life with a thick poetic feeling to his seemingly minimalistic work; Sankuanz is housed in his small hometown of Xiamen to avoid the bustling distractions of city life.
