While Rei Kawakubo held steadfast with her groundbreaking CDG collections, on the other side of the world, Belgian designer, Martin Margiela, would take cues from Rei's deconstructive techniques, spinning them in his own visual language. His vast body of work would go on to inspire the likes of some of the most influential designers today such as Raf Simons or Demna Gvasalia, all thanks to the seminal design house, Maison Margiela.
Fast-forward to the recent years, Martin Margiela has since handed down the reigns to John Galliano, appointing him the new Creative Director as of 2015. With multiple seasons already under his belt, Galliano continues to lead the atelier, returning with the inaugural Maison Margiela Pre-Fall 2018 Collection. The concise assemblage packs a slew of light layering pieces coupled with delicate hand-feel fabrics, vibrant paint splatters and conceptual prints.
Channeled through Margiela's deconstructive lens, familiar silhouettes like sweaters, hoodies, trousers and T-shirts feature subtle traces of deconstruction informed by Galliano's signature bias cutting techniques. A standout piece is the Maison Margiela 900 Pants with a white patch at the side that reads "STEREOTYPE: [n. a person or thing that conforms to a standardized image]". The Maison Margiela 101 Replica Low Top is fully coated in dried paint cracking uniquely to each wearer. Maison Margiela's infamous number logo appears as well. Other pieces like the signature Maison Margiela 961 Replica Low Top, 900 Hoodie and the 855 Gauge Destroyed Jersey round out the collection.
